Terms and Conditions for the BCX Digital Innovation Awards: Official contest rules

COMMON TERMS USED IN THESE RULES: These are the official rules (“Official rules”) that govern the BCX Digital Innovation Awards. In these rules, “we,” “our” and “us” refer to Business Connexion (PTY) LTD (“BCX”), the owner of the awards. “You” and “your” refer to an eligible contest /entrant, and “your company” refers to the company that the entrant is associated with (i) that is being represented or (ii) on behalf of whom the contestant / entrant has submitted their entry.
Terms and Conditions
  • If you have previously been awarded a place in the BCX Digital Innovation Awards competition(s), you may not enter the same innovation into the competition again.
  • However, if you have made upgrades, enhancements or changes to the original innovation that constitutes an alteration to 60% or more of the original innovation you will be permitted to submit the innovation again. Judges will only judge the enhancements.
  • By submitting your information, you agree to receive awards-related communications during the commencement of the competition. See our privacy policy.
  • By entering this competition, you agree that you and your organisation will not hold BCX, it’s associated companies, agents, contractors and sponsors liable for any direct or indirect loss or damage based on the activities undertaken during the awards or for any loss or damage sustained to your reputation or business.
  • BCX will hold all innovation documentation submitted for the awards as private and confidential. Only authorised individuals who have signed the BCX non-disclosure agreement will be given access to award submissions. Authorised individuals include Judges, the BCX Innovation Centre of Excellence core team and BCX heads of business tasked with the SME partnership prize roll out.
  • Information submitted by entrants will only be published in the media if authorisation has been received from the entrant’s organisation. This is specific to the publicising of high-level descriptions of the digital innovations which have been recognised through shortlisting or having received acknowledgement for achievement in any of the categories.
  • BCX reserves the right to extend the closing date for submissions in any category should it be deemed appropriate.
  • BCX reserves the right to cancel any category of the awards during the awards process.
  • BCX may amend these terms and conditions without notifying you.
  • There is no entry fee associated with the BCX Digital Innovation Awards, all entries are free. Organisations may enter multiple entries in multiple categories as long as the organisation falls within the category restrictions as a business for example, the organisation is either a SME (small to medium enterprise), a Corporate or a Public Sector Entity.
  • All entries must comply to the submissions format as outlined in the awards entry pack.
  • If an entry is inaccurate or incomplete, does not comply with the conditions for entry or is deemed, at the sole discretion of the BCX Digital Innovation Awards, ineligible for any other reason, then the relevant entry will be disqualified.
  • Entries must be received before the closing date of the awards to be considered. All entries must be submitted using the official entry pack format by midnight (GMT) on the advertised closing date. If you experience any difficulty with the entry process, please contact digitalinnovationaward@bcx.co.za before the closing date.
  • All entries must be submitted in accordance with the process outlined by the awards entry pack.
  • Patentable and private information disclosed in the entry pack should be so indicated and will then be treated as such and fully protected.
  • These terms and conditions are subject to the laws of the Republic of South Africa.
  • We may terminate the competition immediately and without notice if we need to do so because of the law.

Category: Corporate Enterprise
    • Best in Technology: Technology innovation refers to the design and implementation of new solutions that employ conceptual, process, product, or organisational change, which ultimately aim to drive business growth and digital transformation to better serve customers.

    • Best in Society and Sustainability: Sustainable innovation involves making intentional changes to a company’s products, services, or processes to generate long-term social and environmental benefits while creating economic profits for the business.

Category: Small and Medium Enterprise

    • Best in Society and Sustainability: Sustainable innovation involves making intentional changes to a company’s products, services, or processes to generate long-term social and environmental benefits while creating economic profits for the business.
      Prizes: R40 000, Possible Partnership, Trophy & certificate.
    • Overall winner 2024: Best overall in all rating criteria.
      Prizes: R80 000, Possible Partnership, Trophy & certificate.
    Entry Requirements
    General: 
      • The awards are open to SME, Corporate and Public Sector organisations.
      • The competition is only open to businesses registered within South Africa whose innovation submissions are of benefit to South Africa.
      • Submissions must demonstrate the use of technology to innovate.
      • Submissions must demonstrate how the innovation effort has added value to the organisation as well as to South Africa.
      • Digital Innovation entries submitted for consideration should showcase working innovations that are no older than 4 years.
      • The Digital Innovations submitted into the awards must still be operational within the organisation’s context.
      Corporate Enterprise – Entry Requirements:
        • The organisation must be registered in South Africa.
        • The innovation must benefit South Africa.
        • The organisation must have existed for more than a year.
        • All digital innovations submitted must be in operation.
        • The organisation must employ more than 250 people.
      Public Sector Entity – Entry Requirements:
        • Must be an official South African Government Entity. (i.e. Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Arts and Culture).
        • The innovation must benefit South Africa.
        • All digital innovations submitted must be in operation.
      Small and Medium Enterprise – Entry Requirements:
        • The organisation must be registered in South Africa.
        • The innovation must benefit South Africa.
        • Direct managerial involvement by owners.
        • The organisation must have existed for more than a year.
        • All digital innovations submitted must be in operation.
      Judging

       

        • Judges are selected by the BCX Innovation Centre of Excellence based on their experience in the field of innovation and technology.
        • In the case of an unforeseen or unexpected event that cannot be reasonably anticipated or controlled (also referred to as “force majeure”) BCX reserves the right to replace any of the selected judges before and during judging.
        • BCX will consider each entry based on the information provided by the organisation. 
        • You will be informed whether your entry has been shortlisted via email. The email will be sent to the email address provided on your submission form.
        • Shortlisted entries will be required to supply media and other information to BCX to be used for display in BCX’s marketing materials leading up to the awards and during the week of the awards. Entrants authorise BCX to publicly display all images and information provided for this purpose.
        • Only shortlisted entries will be invited to the award event.
        • The winners will be announced at the BCX Digital Innovation Awards in November. Information about all stages of the awards from entry to award will be emailed to contestants using the email provided in the entry pack.
        • BCX’s decisions relating to shortlisting and selection of winners during judging, is final and BCX will not enter any correspondence or discussion with any entrants on any subject nor will BCX accept any submissions, representations or appeals with regard to such decisions.
      BCX reserves the right to:
        • Disqualify entries that do not comply with these Terms & Conditions or for any other reason.
        • Disqualify entries that do not supply all of the information required by the entry pack guidelines (5 questions).
        • Not make an award in any or all of the given categories.
        • Move an entry to another category without notice, if BCX feels it would be better suited to the relevant category.
        • Disqualify any entry that is a product of two or more companies that does not have the agreement of all parties to enter the awards.
        • Disqualify any entry that does not have the authorisation from their organisation to enter these awards.

        Nominations
          • If you are entering on behalf of another organisation, the entry pack submitted must indicate that the nominee is aware of the intent to nominate him/her/them and must agree to the nomination.
          • The nominee needs to be involved in the preparation of the submissions to ensure accuracy and comprehensiveness. We require this to be confirmed on the nomination form
          • Where the nominator prepares the material, the nominee should be aware of and approve the submission content.
        Force Majeure
          • In the case of an unforeseen or unexpected event that cannot be reasonably anticipated or controlled (also referred to as “force majeure”) which in turn affects the fairness and/or integrity of this contest, we reserve the right to cancel, change or suspend this contest. This right is reserved whether the event is due to human or technical error. If a solution cannot be found to restore the integrity of the contest, we reserve the right to select winners from among all eligible entries received before cancelling, changing, or suspending the contest.
        Winners Announcements
          • All shortlisted contestants will be invited to the awards event in November at which the winners of each category will be announced. BCX will issue a press release announcing the winners.
