Achieving operational intelligence in mining

29 July, 2026
AI and agentic AI are proving transformative in some of the world’s most technologically advanced mines. However, many South African mines still lag in terms of digital transformation.

South Africa’s Minerals Council notes that modernisation and innovation are crucial for long-term resilience in the mining industry, highlighting the importance of mechanisation, digitisation, and safety and health-enhancing technologies for safe, healthy, productive mines that are globally competitive. The Human Sciences Research Council believes that adopting digital technologies could add billions in value to the mining industry.

At BCX, we see local mining enterprises moving to digitise, automate, better utilise data and harness AI. However, what is often lacking is a cohesive strategy to achieve operational intelligence that delivers measurable outcomes.

Operational intelligence is the ability to transform real-time operational data into coordinated action across the mining value chain. In this context, AI is not the starting point. It is the outcome of connected, governed and operationalised systems informed by IoT data from disparate systems and enhanced by AI.

Making this shift delivers measurable improvements; for example, Rio Tinto has cut operating costs by integrating AI with automation across its entire supply chain. By unifying data from most of its sites, the company uses AI, advanced analytics and digital twins to eliminate inefficiencies, lower diesel consumption and predict equipment failures before they cause costly downtime.

Smarter operations

With smarter operations, mines can address common challenges such as downtime due to unscheduled maintenance, operational bottlenecks and declining profitability. Highly connected, digitised ‘smart’ mining operations that utilise automation, IoT and AI benefit from significantly improved safety, efficiency, productivity and sustainability.

Boston Consulting Group (BCG) reports that digital leaders can achieve step-change operational outcomes, including throughput improvements of about 10% to 20%.

AI is also revolutionising exploration: Botswana Diamonds famously used AI technology to identify new diamond-bearing zones and uncover new targets for copper, cobalt, zinc and gold.

The connected mine foundation

These gains are not delivered by isolated technologies. They rely on the integration of three layers:

  • Reliable, low-latency connectivity that enables data movement and visibility
  • Data platforms that enable coordination and standardisation
  • AI models that enable prediction, optimisation and decision support

The sequencing is deliberate: infrastructure is stabilised first; data is unified second, and intelligence is applied third.

Delivering operational intelligence as an operational capability, rather than a collection of pilots, requires coordination across the full technology stack.

This means ecosystem-led partnerships, where technology providers and integration specialists work together to deliver end-to-end outcomes rather than isolated solutions.

For example, Telkom Business provides the connectivity foundation that allows data to move securely and reliably across complex mining environments. BCX leverages its global partnerships for the digital infrastructure, cloud, data platforms and AI capabilities that transform operational information into operational intelligence at scale. Then it enables these capabilities to function within the realities of local mining operations by integrating systems, managing complexity and embedding intelligence into day-to-day decision-making. Together, these capabilities create a clear pathway from connectivity to intelligence to execution.

Mining clouds

Cloud computing underpins data-driven mining, connecting data silos and enabling mines to access massive volumes of remote site data for analysis and actionable insights. With cloud computing, real-time monitoring, collaboration and automation are simplified. However, it is crucial that the cloud infrastructure is engineered for reliability, security and cost-effectiveness.

Cyber security for critical infrastructure

Mines are a compelling target for malicious cyber actors, which is why attacks such as ransomware attacks against mines are increasing. Securing mission-critical systems can prove challenging, particularly in legacy operational technology (OT) and industrial control systems (ICS). Building cyber resilience is crucial for supporting operational intelligence, with updates and patching, multi-layered cyber defence and advanced identity and access management all necessary to reinforce security

Building intelligent industries

In mining, intelligence only becomes valuable when it changes what happens next. This is where BCX’s role becomes critical: integrating systems across IT and operational environments, aligning data with workflows and ensuring that intelligence becomes part of how operations run.

BCX is a strategic partner helping South African mining enterprises become more connected, intelligent, secure and future-ready through AI, cloud, cybersecurity, data and intelligent infrastructure solutions.
